The date December 21st, 2012 represents a close conjunction between the winter solstice(earth's axis tipped furtherest away from the sun) with the crossing point of the galactic equator, and the ecliptic path of the sun (line sun seems to follow across our sky).
Basically, the Mayans predicted that on This winter date the calender year is going to end and the world is going to face a major reconstruction process. It is said that cumilation of sunspots on the sun will change magnetic fields resulting in floods and earthquakes.
It is actually quite amazing how much are earth is affected by the solar system; mainly our sun.
